The Macquarie Point stadium has taken a step forward with developers providing extra information requested by the planning commissioner which includes further details and new images of the $715 million project.

A spokesperson from Macquarie Point Development Corporation said they had responded to the letter from Tasmanian Planning Commission, TPC, about further details over the multipurpose stadium which has been classified as a Project of State Significance (PoSS).

“After we submitted our PoSS application in September, the TPC wrote to us late last year asking for more detail on some aspects of the project. Seeking clarifications and further information is a normal part of assessing large and complex developments,” the spokesperson said.

Specifically Planning Commissioner John Ramsay sought more details on transport, planning and financial aspects of the plan in a 12-page letter in November.

“In response, we have provided a comprehensive set of supplementary reports, including providing clarifications and information on the design, planning analysis, further information on the financial analysis, further information on transport and movement, environmental information, and engagement,” the Macquarie Point Development Corporation spokesman said.

The new details include event bus stops, the construction of a northern access road for vehicles needing to access the port during events as well as bike lockers for those cycling to events. New renders have been supplied which show the positioning of stadium signage.

“We will continue working with the TPC as the process moves forward, including providing further updates and information as required., “ the spokesman said.

The TPC will release a draft Integrated Assessment Report for public exhibition after the first phase of its review is complete. It is anticipated it will also note when hearings are likely to be held.”

Included in this response are new renders of the multipurpose stadium – set to include 23,000 seats, a function room, catering facilities and a stage pocket.

Mr Ramsay wrote to Macquarie Point Development Corporation again mid January to explain how the legislation governing the assessment works.

“What is to be considered in an integrated assessment is a matter for the commission, having regard to the provisions of the act, its scope and purpose, the content of the PoSS Order and the ministerial direction,” he wrote.

“The combined application of the above determines the extent of matters to be considered as part of the integrated assessment.”

The Hobart stadium has garnered a lot of attention since its announcement in 2023, with bodies like the Planning Commission and Hobart City council wanting more details on the project, as well as a critical report from Dr Nicholas Gruen.

The contract with the AFL requires the stadium be 50 per cent complete by October 2027 and ready to host matches in the 2029 season.
