A Hobart restaurateur accused of ripping off an insurance company for almost $200,000 following a 2019 Lamborghini crash has appeared before Tasmania’s Chief Justice, after being arrested and charged with failing to appear on a Supreme Court warrant.
Lipscombe Larder owner John Spiro Fiotakis is facing one count of attempting to dishonestly acquire a financial advantage from Allianz Insurance Australia, after allegedly falsely stating he was the driver of the high-priced sports car when it was involved in a collision six years ago.
After Mr Fiotakis failed to appear in court on Thursday, Chief Justice Chris Shanahan issued a warrant for the defendant’s arrest.
Tasmania Police confirmed on Friday that a 64-year Sandy Bay man had been arrested, charged, and detained to appear in the Hobart Supreme Court.
According to a court document, Mr Fiotakis is accused of attempting to dishonestly acquire a financial advantage of $184,700 for himself or another person, by making false representations in support of an insurance claim, but knowing these to be false.
Chief Justice Shanahan adjourned the matter until 28 May, and bailed Mr Fiotakis to reappear on that date.
