It will be business as usual at the Launceston Dogs’ Home on Monday as the shelter returns to full operations and intake after storms ripped through the Mowbray property in September last year.
Strong winds and heavy rain tore through the home, turning most of the open-air spaces into mud pits and destroying pet bedding, roofing, and play equipment.
Dogs Home of Tasmania described the yards as “already in poor condition” when the poor weather came through.
“The exercise yards – already in poor condition – were left completely unfit for use,” a spokesperson said.
“The damage forced us to scale back operations immediately, limiting intake to only the most urgent cases and moving most dogs into foster care or transferring them to our other Homes.”
The site is owned by Launceston City Council (LCC), which required the Dogs’ Home to leave most repairs to the council.
However, LCC soon approved the demolition of the existing exercise yards and built six brand new fenced yards.
The turf placed inside the runs resulted in a further delay as the Dogs’ Home needed to ensure the lawn had established itself enough before letting any puppy paws onto it full-time.
The Mowbray centre has now returned to normal working hours and full dog capacity, with the aim of getting rehoming back up and running in the Launceston area.
“The reopening of the Launceston Dogs’ Home means more dogs can stay closer to home, more families can be supported locally, and our team can continue to do what they do best — help dogs in need find safety, comfort, and love,” a Dogs’ Home spokesperson said.
“We want to thank everyone who’s followed this journey and supported us along the way.
“Your encouragement has meant the world — and helped us stay focused on what matters most: making sure every dog gets the care they deserve, no matter how long it takes.”
Long-term Dohs’ Home resident Bella, who has spent a year in the care of the Launceston home, was one of the first dogs to try out the new exercise yards.
The Dogs’ Home is now looking to the public to help out with the final touches, hoping for some donations of new or near-new large wooden kennels, heavy-duty play equipment like bungee chooks or bungee balls or large dog day beds.
To donate items or funds, contact the Dogs’ Home of Tasmania via email at mdm@dhot.com or call 03 6243 8570 to arrange drop-off.
