Five new electronic highway signboards will soon be installed across Greater Hobart, providing real-time information to help road-users make informed travel decisions.
The most prominent existing example of this technology is located on the Tasman Hwy near Hobart Airport, with the state government set to begin erecting a further five Overhead Traveller Information Systems (OTIS) signboards in the state’s South this week.
Locations include the Brooker Hwy, near the Berriedale overpass; the Huon Hwy between Summerleas Rd and the Southern Outlet; the South Arm Hwy, between Oceana Dve and the Shoreline roundabout; and two locations on the Tasman Hwy, one between Cambridge Rd and the Mornington interchange, and the other between the Mornington roundabout and Dampier St.
Parliamentary Secretary for Infrastructure Kerry Vincent said the technology would be “key for informing the community about traffic flow”.
“Importantly, they will also provide information about crashes, changes in weather, or unplanned incidents, so people on the road can make informed decisions about their travel,” he said.
Gantries for the five new signboards will be installed from Monday and these works are expected to be completed by Tuesday, October 15. After that, final tests of the signboards will be undertaken before they go live.
The works will be conducted outside peak hours – between 6.30pm and 6am and 9.30am and 3pm – to avoid disruptions to traffic.
An additional six OTIS signboards will eventually be installed across Greater Hobart.
