Update: 4:25pm, Monday May 23:

A WOMAN in her 80s died after a serious crash in Sandy Bay on Monday morning.

The 83-year-old lost control of a white Holden Cruz at the entry to ­Guilford Young Grove Senior Citizens Village on St Canice Ave.

Initial investigations show the car jumped a gutter, crashed through a 3m wide garden bed before launching into the air and into the side of a unit.

The vehicle sustained significant damage to its front end and the impact with the villa left a sizeable hole in the brickwork.

Ambulance officers arrived at the scene shortly after the crash and transported the woman to hospital, while police officers cordoned off the area to investigate the cause of the crash. Sadly, the woman died later in hospital.

Emergency services are at the scene of a serious single-vehicle crash on St Canice Ave, Sandy Bay.

According to Police, a person has received serious injuries.

Reports from the scene suggest a white Holden Cruze had crashed hrough a garden and into a villa at the St Canice Lifestyle Village.

Woman seriously injured in crash

3pm, Sunday May 12

A woman has been taken to hospital with serious head and leg injuries after a crash in the state’s north this afternoon.

Emergency services were called to Forth Rd, Don around 12.30pm after reports of a single vehicle crash.

The 63-year-old female driver and sole occupant of the vehicle was treated at the scene by paramedics before she was transported to the North West Regional Hospital.

She is in a serious condition with severe head and leg injuries.

The road was closed for several hours while Crash Investigation Services examined the scene.

Sergeant Jareth Anderson of Devonport Police called for caution on the road.

“The high number of serious crashes across the state is of serious concern and police urge all motorists to be vigilant on our roads and ensure you arrive safely home to those who matter most,” Sgt. Anderson said.

“Tasmania Police are working closely with our road safety partners to develop the best policing strategies and educational messages for motorists, but we need the community to do their part and take care on our roads.”

The cause of the crash is unknown at this stage and police are appealing for anyone who may

have observed a grey Mitsubishi Triton duel cab, 2002 model, driving on Forth Rd Don

around the time of the Crash to contact Devonport Police on 64784011.

Police investigating serious assault

8am, Sunday May 22

Police are investigating an alleged serious assault after a man was left with a fractured jaw during an incident at a Tasmanian football club overnight.

Around 11.45pm on Saturday, a 31-year-old man from Queensland suffered a suspected fractured jaw during an altercation at the Queenstown Crows Football Club in Mary St, Queenstown.

The man was taken to the North West Regional Hospital and is receiving treatment for his injuries.

Police are investigating the incident.

Earlier in the day emergency services attended the West Park Football Oval in Burnie after a player was injured during an incident in the third quarter of the match between Penguin Two-Blues and Burnie Dockers.

The incident occurred during a melee between players that occurred behind the play.

The circumstances of the player’s injuries are now subject to a police investigation.

The player was treated on-field before being transported to the North West Regional Hospital

where he remains in a stable condition.

Police are appealing for any witnesses of either event, or anybody with video footage of the incidents, to contact police on 131 444 or via Crimestoppers on 1800 333 000.

Exploding gas stove damages home – Devonport

Saturday, May 21

An exploding gas stove has ripped through a home in Devonport one Saturday afternoon after it was left on a cooktop.

The camping stove was being used at the home in Steele Street during a power outage and was placed on the kitchen cooktop but when power was restored, it heated and exploded.

The occupants of the home were not harmed, but the explosion caused significant damage to the to the property, including to the windows, window frames and roof tiles.

Fire investigators deemed the blaze accidental.

The incident has prompted a warning to the public from Tasmania Fire Service to be vigilant when using gas cookers.
