Tasmania AFL team expected to become a reality

Claims of secret plans for an apartment development to be built at Regatta Point to shoehorn housing into the stadium proposal has been met with anger from groups including the Hobart City Council and RSL.

The Mercury reported today that Prime Minister Anthony Albanese is set to announce federal government funding for an AFL stadium at Macquarie Point as soon as this weekend.

Mr Albanese has reportedly been keen that the project contain an element of urban renewal in order to stump up federal funding.

In a joint statement, Member for Clark Andrew Wilkie, Hobart Lord Mayor Anna Reynolds, RSL chief John Hardy and Royal Hobart Regatta Association president Ross Doddridge have revealed what they say is a “flawed” secret plans for an apartment development at the Regatta Ground.

“We are deeply concerned about a proposal by the Tasmanian State Government to undertake an apartment project at Regatta Point as part of a broader plan for the proposed stadium at Macquarie Point,” they said in a joint statement.

“We understand that a housing development proposal is being thrown together in haste after a request from the Australian Government who want to see a ‘nod’ to housing as part of any funding bid for an AFL stadium.

“We are concerned that this project is drawing on very limited information and a total lack of consultation with or respect for key stakeholders and caretakers of the land in question.”

The statement raised concerns about the privatisation or the Derwent foreshores and impacts on the Cenotaph.

“The rush to select a random grab-bag of proposals is extraordinarily poor planning and bound to lead to bad decisions that our community will regret for many years.

“We anticipate that there will be a significant public backlash against the loss of this public land for a poorly conceived project.

“We urge the Prime Minister to reject any financial support for these poorly conceived plans for Macquarie and Regatta Points.”

Comment was being sought from the state government in the proposal.
