Alleged whipper-snipper robbery foiled, woman left with ‘fat lip’: Cops

Monday, December 8, 6.45am: A woman has been left with some bruises and “a fat lip” after a man allegedly tried to steal two whipper-snippers from a Palmerston business, police say.

NT Police Northern Watch Commander Mark Edwards said a 20-year-old man is in custody over the alleged attempted robbery, which he alleged occurred in Woodroffe in the early hours of Sunday morning.

The man, with his face covered by a ski mask, entered the building and grabbed the whipper-snippers, but was confronted by a woman, aged 39, during the alleged theft, Mr Edwards said.

The woman suffered minor injuries as a result of the confrontation, Mr Edwards said, but she did not need to be taken to hospital.

She was left with some bruises and “a fat lip,” he said.

After the confrontation, the man allegedly fled with the two lawn moving tools, but police tracked him down and arrested him near Palmerston, Mr Edwards said.

He is in custody awaiting charges, Mr Edwards said.

Both of the whipper snippers were recovered, Mr Edwards said.

Police also had a car chase in Katherine at around 5am Monday morning, Mr Edwards said, which ended with the car police were chasing being discovered bogged.

Mr Edwards said there were few details he could provide as the incident was fresh and still under investigation.

The vehicle had been recovered, Mr Edwards said.

However, he said no arrests had been made, and police were working to identify if the car involved was stolen.
