Supanova faces backlash over Kyle Sandilands’ Brisbane guest appearance
It’s official, the king of radio and KIIS star Kyle Sandilands is coming to Brisbane. But fans aren’t happy about it.
Supanova Comic Con is facing online backlash after they recruited controversial radio star Kyle Sandilands as one of their Brisbane guests.
The event announced on Tuesday that Sandilands, from KIIS’s Kyle and Jackie O Show, was set to walk into the Brisbane Convention Centre as part of the event on November 8.
The Brisbane-born star has collected a string of controversies across his 33 years of radio, including accusations of homophobia, ableism and misogynistic comments.
Sandilands will be attending a panel event at Supanova for his upcoming film Zombie Plane, and is offering a meet-and-greet for fans.
The announcement of Sandilands’ inclusion sparked fierce backlash online.
“The biggest monster ever to grace the halls of Supernova,” Michael Baker wrote.
“Honestly, Supernova, read the room on this one,” Brian Craddock wrote.
Other commenters said Sandilands is irrelevant in the pop culture world.
“I feel like I could be a guest and get more interest just by people going, ‘who is he?’ than this guy,” Matthew Allman wrote.
“You know what sci fi and comic book nerds love? Obnoxious breakfast radio hosts,” Jonathan Brooks wrote.
A spokesman for Supanova said they would stick by the promotion of Zombie Plane.
“As the title would suggest, the upcoming release is right up our alley in terms of genre and features an all-star cast of Australian and international talent, several of whom are set to attend on Saturday only for an exclusive panel in Brisbane,” he said.
“Supanova Comic Con & Gaming prides itself on supporting our local film industry, promoting homegrown projects and the emerging production houses behind them.”
In 2024, the Courier Mail monitored and tracked controversial comments from Sandilands on the radio program broadcasted on Brisbane’s KIIS
It recorded a string of controversial comments including telling listeners that he found people with degrees “boring” but would “still have sex with doctors, females, scientists.”
Kyle Sandilands has been contacted for comment.
