Ultimate SEQ triathlon guide: Bribie Island

AUSTRALIAN Commonwealth Games triathlon representative Luke Willian has a tip for anyone starting in triathlons at the Bribie Triathlon Series event on October 20-21 — bring a bright towel.

Willian, ranked No.25 in the world, will compete at the Bribie Island triathlon which he labelled as “probably one of the easier starter courses’’.

He said in order to find his bike and shoes in the hectic transition area, he had a favourite brightly coloured towel which is strategically draped near his gear.

“Sometimes it is hard to find your bike. I still always run past my bike,’’ Willian said.

“But I use a towel. I have a bright, pink towel to help me find my bike, so that is always good.

“And then you can dry your feet off and run out onto the road.’’

Willian said Bribie Island was the ideal first triathlon.

“I actually have a couple of mates doing it as their first triathlon and I said to them it is probably the best one to pick out, out of all of them.

“It is probably one of the easier starter courses out there because the swim is often tide assisted.

“That is always a big help when you are out on your first triathlon because that is something people probably worry about, the swim.

“But when you have this big current, you are kind of carried down to the transition so that always helps.

“You go out, turn right and you often swim with the tide so you come down (Pumicestone Passage) pretty quickly.

Willian said the bike leg was windy. “But it is very well sign posted. And it is flat. You are just in and out of the housing estates.

“And the run is just along the footpath next to the water so it is nice. It is a nice race.’’
