PRIESTDALE is rising as a sporting club hub in Logan after the state government committed $9.11 million to upgrade facilities at Underwood Park.
The park is home to the Rochedale Rovers Football Club and Underwood Park Netball Association. Both club’s houses will be demolished and both hope for new premises with proposals including change rooms and toilets for women.
The new council-owned building, expected to cost about half of the funding, will also house the Rochedale Meals on Wheels and have storage for BMX and mountain biking clubs and Nerida St community groups. It will also include a multipurpose hall for hire for community events including weddings, meetings and functions.
Once completed, it is expected the park will include four additional netball courts, the existing five soccer fields and a new cafe. Division 1 councillor Lisa Bradley said the overhaul was a long time coming and would seal the park’s fate as a district sports venue.
“Many more community events will be able to be held because of this precinct,” Cr Bradley said.
“At the moment, groups in Nerida Street can’t hold events after 10pm because it’s in a residential area.
“This will open up a range of commercial opportunities — it’s perfect for weddings.”
Funderwood Hollow, a children’s playground is also in the park and attracts thousands of families.
Logan City Council, last week, wiped off a $225,000 debt to Club Rochedale, a facility once based at the park before it was wound up this year, and will not be part of the revamped park.
