A 51-year-old mother has been charged after she allegedly punched an off-duty police officer outside The Avenue nightclub at Surfers Paradise on Saturday.

The officer was walking down Orchid Ave after clocking off a shift at the Surfers Paradise beat at 10.25 on July 12 when he saw an altercation taking place at the club, Acting Chief Superintendent Peter Miles said.

Mr Miles said the off-duty officer tried to break up the fight, identifying himself as a police officer, and took a 19-year-old man into custody to ask him some questions.

“As a result, that male’s mother, a 51-year-old woman from Southport, has then punched him in the face,” Mr Miles alleged.

The woman was charged with assaulting a police officer and is set to appear in the Southport Magistrates Court on July 28.

She was also issued a banning notice from Surfers Paradise.

Her 19-year-old son has not been charged by police.

Mr Miles said the officer who was allegedly punched was recovering well.

“He’s got a stinger, you know, getting punched in the face and not seeing it coming (would be) a pretty cowardly act to be honest,” Mr Miles said.
