A man accused of torching a two-storey house in Adelaide’s north has fronted court for the first time after being arrested nearly 300km from the scene – with documents claiming he may have been the home’s owner.
William Calvin McCann, 57, appeared in the Mount Gambier Magistrates Court last week following his Borderdown arrest – 285km away from where he is alleged to have burnt down a Mawson Lakes property.
Mr McCann is yet to enter any pleas to one count of arson.
Property records indicate Mr McCann is the registered proprietor of 5 Greenleaf Crt, Mawson Lakes – the same address prosecutors allege was set alight and completely gutted earlier this month.
Nine trucks – including a specialist aerial appliance – and a command car were called to the scene about 4.30am on April 16,
The MFS said the blaze took 60 minutes to contain and as of 6.30am, firefighters were still at the scene monitoring hotspots.
A small portion of the roof of the two-storey property – which had collapsed – was still billowing smoke. Fortunately, no one was home at the time.
The home’s exterior including windows and doors were also fully destroyed.
Mr McCann will return to court at a later date.
