The Adelaide Crows’ disastrous start to the AFL season has been slammed from more than 13,000km away with a US woman’s amusing takedown of Matthew Nicks.

The Adelaide Crows’ uninspiring start to the AFL season has drawn criticism from an American woman in LA, delivering a hilarious takedown of Matthew Nicks.
Footy fan Cindye – a Los Angeles resident who claims to be the most knowledgeable female on the AFL in the whole United States – delivered a humorous blow to Nicks and the Crows on a podcast she launched, inspired by her fandom of a game played on the other side of the world.
“Sources tell me that Matty Nicks is hosting a barbie to introduce the Adelaide midfield to Adelaide forwards,” she quipped.
“His game plan of hitting opposition defenders on the chest is apparently falling out of favour at the Crows … along with snags and beers, player name tags and headshots with he exchanged”
Her quick-witted blow struck a chord with fans here in South Australia, with Crows diehards begging for better results as the languishing Crows are still winless after four rounds.
Nicks wasn’t the only Crow in her firing line as she comically referred to Crow star Josh Rachelle as a Melbourne defender as he denied the Crows “at least three late scoring opportunities”.
“I mean did you see (Rachelle’s) spoil on Tex Walker in the last?”
The witty lines feature in a Gather Round wrap-up episode of her podcast, a show with a modest social following of 1000 on YouTube and Instagram.
Her videos take the game to the streets of LA, as she quizzes Americans on our great game with hilarious results.
Cindye told The Advertiser her obsession with Aussie rules began when her Australian partner took her to a bar in Hollywood to watch the 2006 grand final between the West Coast Eagles and the Sydney Swans.
She said Travis Fimmel – an Australian actor and former model – was in the Hollywood bar to watch the game.
“My partner is a West Australian and Eagles fan and responsible for exposing me to the game … what an introduction – Eagles won by a point,” she said.
Cindye said the spectacle of the famous grand final started her AFL obsession and she grew to “love the fast pace, athleticism, attractive men, ferocity, and the communal element” of the game.
“The 2006 grand final was a great hook, getting to watch games on a regular basis, however, was difficult over here,” she said.
“Then, sometime around 2016, the Watch AFL app came out and I was able to start watching Eagles games every week.
Cindye said the AFL’s ability to push through and play during the height of Covid restrictions meant it was one of the only sports available to watch.
“In 2020, the documentary Making Their Mark came out and had a profound effect on me … it connected me to the game on a more personal level, and I became interested in the competition, as opposed to just the Eagles.”
“And because of Covid, AFL was the only sport being played on the planet, and I dove right in.”
She said the idea of launching into content creation happened after things got to the point where her friends in Australia found her footy obsession “hysterical”.
“The novelty of an American woman being obsessed with AFL just seemed like a fun idea. originally, the plan was just to entertain friends back in Australia,” she said.
Cindye said she spent hours watching AFL content with her “rabid footy fan” partner.
“Together we watch most games and the Watch AFL app has all the Fox Footy shows … we also watch a lot of footy content on YouTube, ranging from SEN to Eddie and Jimmy to press conferences to player interviews, which keeps us up to date on all things footy,” she said.
She said her partner was a West Coast fan and helped behind the scenes with the show.
