Loved ones have paid tribute a young motorbike rider, who was killed in a collision on New Year’s Eve, while others have launched a fundraiser to support his young family.

At 6:45pm on Sunday, Tyler Matthews-Burnes, of Elizabeth East, was travelling along the intersection of Robe and Fitzroy terraces, in North Adelaide, when he collided with a car.

Mr Matthews-Burnes, who was 11 days away from celebrating his 25th birthday, was rushed to the Royal Adelaide Hospital but he died of his injuries.

A friend of Mr Matthews-Burnes’ launched a fundraiser on Thursday to support the family “he leaves behind”, which has already garnered $1,040 of its $5,000 target.

“A beautiful soul taken way too soon in a tragic accident. A son, brother, father and friend.,” the GoFundMe fundraiser read.

“I can’t take away their pain but I may be able to help raise some money for funeral costs and his little girl. Anything will help.”

Friends have taken to social media to remember the motorcycling enthusiast and father of a toddler girl.

Tyneece Clifford said she was “absolutely shattered” by his death.

“The most kind-hearted, loving and caring person taken way too soon,” Ms Clifford wrote.

“I’m lost without words, you will forever be in my heart. Condolences to your beautiful family.

“Love you brother, you will always be family.”

Another friend, Jaide Bass, warned other motorists to “be careful on the roads”, before remembering Mr Matthews-Burnes as “one of the most beautiful souls” she had ever met.

“Everyone has family and friends that care about you so think before you get behind the wheel because you could be taking the light away from a someone’s life,” Ms Bass wrote.

The driver of the other car, a 30-year-old Northfield man, has been arrested and charged with causing death by dangerous driving and aggravated driving without due care.

He was bailed to appear in the Adelaide Magistrates Court on March 31, 2024.

Mr Matthews-Burnes’s death marked the end of a horror year on the state’s roads.

117 lives were lost on our state’s roads last year, compared to 71 in the previous year.

Speaking about the tragically high road toll, SA Police Assistant Commissioner of State Operations Service, Ian Parrott, said “every life lost on SA roads is preventable”.

“Overwhelmingly, the actions and behaviour of the driver of a vehicle, or rider of a motorcycle, has resulted in them killing themselves, a passenger, cyclist or pedestrian,” Mr Parrott said.

“Surviving ‘at fault’ drivers can and do face jail time, along with a lifetime of guilt and regret.

“These inexcusable actions and behaviours include risk taking that most people rightly consider too dangerous, and don’t engage in.

“But, despite our efforts to educate, warn and enforce the road safety rules that we know will save lives, we still see this risk taking behaviour far too often.”
