Two women allegedly hit by drunk driver, five times the legal limit during peak-hour in the CBD

Two women have walked away relatively unharmed, after they were allegedly hit and knocked to the ground by a drunk driver in Adelaide’s CBD on Thursday.

A member of the public has made a citizen’s arrest after it is alleged a drunk driver hit two young women crossing a city street during Thursday’s peak-hour traffic.

Police were called to Waymouth Street in the CBD at about 4.30pm, after a Ford Ranger ute collided with two pedestrians.

Witnesses who saw the incident said the man driving the ute had run a red light and hit the two women who were crossing the busy intersection.

The force of the hit knocked the two girls to the ground, but luckily, they were not seriously injured and were treated at the scene by paramedics.

The man who made the citizen’s arrest asked not to be identified.

“I wanted to make sure he did not drive away,” he said.

“I stepped in front of his car and then approached him when he stopped.

A SA Ambulance spokesperson said the two women did not suffer any “obvious injuries” and did not need “transporting” to hospital.

The driver, a 44-year-old man from Glengowrie, was breath tested and allegedly produced a blood alcohol reading of 0.239, almost five times the legal limit.

The man was reported for drink driving and aggravated driving without due care.

He was issued with a twelve-month instant loss of licence and his car was impounded. He will be summonsed to appear in court at a later date.
