Dashcam footage in South Australia shows a hair-raising near-miss when a car attempted to overtake a truck driver.

Shocking video has emerged of a near-miss on the Sturt Highway, with the footage revealing just how close an overtaking driver came to causing complete carnage.

FIVEAA’s David Penberthy introduced a truck driver on his morning radio show on Tuesday to detail an encounter with a reckless driver he captured while driving on the major road just days ago.

“Ian, who’s actually a mate of mine … he now does long-haul delivery work as a truckie, and he has actually provided us with the extraordinary dashcam footage,” he said.

“This ratbag car overtook his truck, with another car coming in the other direction that had to swerve and drive off onto the side highway.

“How nobody was hit and nobody was injured or worse, is anyone’s guess.”

The truck driver, Ian, told FIVEAA he was doing 100km/h on the Sturt Hwy when a speeding Rav 4 tried to overtake him and was heading straight into an oncoming vehicle.

Ian said he believed the overtaking driver must have seen the approaching car but took on the takeover manoeuvre anyway.

“I looked ahead of myself and I went, ‘there’s another white car coming, this is not going to work’,” Ian said.

“I took the foot off the accelerator to give him some more room but that was no way going to be good enough.

“(The other car) saw it coming, and he started veering off the road and they crossed each other and ones off the road and ones on the other side of the road – just ridiculous.

Ian said the car was seconds away from causing a disaster.

“If they did connect, I would have been involved as well and I’m on a B double, 55 tons, and it wouldn’t have been pretty,” he said,

“We’re back to where we were five years ago with the road toll, I mean, you would have had another three or four there depends how many people were in the car,

Ian said he had encountered reckless driving, like was captured on the dashcam footage, “daily”.

“It’s every single day … I had a guy passing me on some roadworks yesterday, it was 80km/h, and he passed me on during the roadworks, it’s nothing unusual,” he said.

“They don’t care, they just take these risks …. they just go crazy every single day I have to deal with this stuff,

Ian said he had taken the footage to police and reported the incident.
