The opposition has called for a road safety social media campaign following an incident which saw David Speirs fall victim to tailgating.

A video obtained by The Advertiser shows a P-plater, in a red Ford sedan, tailgating Mr Speirs and dangerously swerving and honking the car’s horn on January 27.

“Unfortunately, I witnessed the irresponsible antics of a P-plater on my way to visit Mannum first-hand, ” Mr Speirs said.

“It was a shocking reminder that some young drivers have a long way to go when it comes to respect and safety on our roads.

“It was a miracle no one was hurt,” he said.

The incident has resulted in the opposition calling on the government for a targeted social media campaign to educated inexperienced drivers.

Vincent Tarzia, opposition spokesman for road safety, said they are calling for a “quick-fire social media campaign” to get road safety messages out to “young drivers sooner rather than later.”

“Clearly, the Malinauskas Labor Government needs to make road safety a bigger priority, because right now it appears to be taking a back seat,” he said.

When questioned about the road toll at parliament house on Tuesday, Premier Peter Malinauskas said the government is open-minded to campaigns that can help minimise the road toll.

“We’ve got a number of issues that we’re pursuing in relation to road safety,” he said.

“The road safety action plan is something we want to pursue as best as we possibly can.”

Mr Malinauskas said he hopes the state will follow the record-low road toll that was recorded last year.

“We know these campaigns can make a difference,” he said.

A police spokeswoman said they are currently investigating reports of a dangerous driving incident in the Adelaide Hills.

This comes as 16 lives have been lost on South Australian roads this year.
