A woman has been arrested for arson after allegedly lighting her mother-in-law’s house on fire at Oakden on Wednesday, leaving extensive damage to the property.

Emergency services were called to Lord Howe Ave at Oakden, at about 10.20am, after reports of large thick black smoke and flames billowing from the roof.

Footage captured by 9News Adelaide shows police arresting a 28-year-old western suburb at the scene, and charging her with arson, as she pleaded with them that it was not her.

“Why would I do that to my mother in-law? Stop … stop,” she said to detectives.

Metropolitan Fire Service crews were able to contain the blaze shortly after arriving, with no reports of injuries.

A concerned neighbour, Glen Kammermann spoke to 9News at the scene, and said the house lit up quickly.

“It just went off over a matter of minutes, then smoke was pouring out of the house,” he said.

“Something went up big time.

“I really feel, especially for the lady that lives there as a permanent resident.”

Detectives will continue their investigation into the incident, which comes after another house fire completely destroyed a Dernancourt home on Monday night.

Police and emergency services were called to Raphael Ave, Dernancourt just before 8.30pm on Monday night to reports of a house fire, and arrived to find the home fully engulfed in flames.

An MFS spokesman said 26 firefighters and six fire trucks battled the blaze and were able to control it within 45 minutes while protecting surrounding homes.
