RSPCA SA calls for tougher laws

Two friends have come together to help raise money for a cherished dog following a savage attack by a neighbour’s dog in the northern suburbs.

Fundraiser organiser’s Alexandra Newland and Danielle Baumber started a GoFundMe for Kristel and Marcus, who are unable to cover the full cost of treatment after their pug, Lexi was mauled by a neighbours dog on August 4 in Brahma Lodge.

The pair are now hoping to raise $5000 to go towards Lexi’s vet bill which is estimated cost up to $8000, as she “may need major surgery to amputate her leg.”

Ms Newland wrote on the fundraiser that the owners “are not eligible for VetPay,” and claimed the owner of the dog that mauled Lexi “will not contribute to any costs.”

From the vicious attack, Lexi sustained significant injuries and needed urgent surgery to treat her injuries, with her first surgery beginning the next day.

She was transferred from The Small Animal Specialist Hospital in Kent Town to Noah’s Crossing Veterinary Clinic in Lewiston.

Ms Newland said she had a successful surgery, but veterinarians noticed “her other shoulder was badly bruised.”

Lexi was sent home with “anti-inflammatories, antibiotics and pain killers,” and was scheduled for a check up at the vet on Monday August 5, “to see how her muscle sand nerves are doing”.

As she was recovering at home, Lexi had to be confined to a crate “as per the vet’s orders,” and managed to eat, drink and take her medication despite not being able to use her legs.

“Her owners also need to look into hydrotherapy and physio to help her get back on her feet,” Ms Newland explained on the update posted on the 5th of August.

Following the check up on Monday, Ms Newland posted an update on Lexi’s condition to let the community know that “they are happy with how she’s improving

“She’s trying to put her paw down so we shall see how she is by the end of the week,” she wrote.

As of Thursday morning, the fundraiser has garnered $970 from 29 donors, since starting the fundraiser five days ago.

Ms Newland and Ms Baumber are now hoping the community will help “relive some burden from Kristel and Marcus’s family in such a trying time.”

This comes after another Hewett couple’s beloved dog was killed during an attack by a neighbours dog on Tuesday August 1.

Jasmin Dawe and Sam Barker received a call from a neighbour on Tuesday morning to tell them their nine-year-old Australian shepherd Liberty had been mauled to death by another neighbour’s dog.
