Hazmat teams were called to Port Augusta Police Station on Thursday afternoon after an envelope containing an unknown powder was left at reception.

A Metropolitan Fire Service crew attended the station on Commercial Rd at 3pm to seize the envelope, and police staff were forced to close the front counter for up to an hour, according to an SA Police spokeswoman.

She could not comment on who presented the envelope, or whether any investigations are underway, but its contents will be examined further.

No injuries were reported and the station has since reopened.
