Police investigating the death of a woman after she was found inside a Morphett Vale home

Neighbours have expressed their condolences for a woman killed in a devastating house fire in Adelaide’s south.

A woman has been found dead after their home was completely destroyed by fire in Morphett Vale overnight.

Firefighters were alerted to the blaze just after 3am at Woodcroft Drive in Morphett Vale.

Sadly, emergency services found the occupant, a 63-year-old woman, deceased inside the property.

Police and Fire Cause Investigators attended the scene and believe the fire is not suspicious, although the cause is still undetermined.

The Advertiser understands the home which was destroyed in the fire was Housing SA property purposed to support people suffering from mental health issues or other issues requiring assistance.

A neighbour Maxine Rogers, 73, said she was devastated to learn that the occupant of the home – understood to be a woman – was found dead in the early hours of Wednesday.

Ms Rogers said she had encountered her neighbour frequently over the 10 years that they’ve lived on the same street – until a few months ago.

“I hadn’t seen her for a couple of months, not even at the shops,” Ms Rogers said. ”

Ms Rogers said she hadn’t observed a lot of family or friends visit the neighbour before her passing, however, she extends her condolences for the loss.

“I don’t like anyone passing away,” she said.

Another neighbour Nikisha, who asked her surname to remain anonymous, said she was woken to the sound of the dog barking and the emergency sirens.

When she came outside to see what was going on she said the fire “was so loud, you could hear the popping sounds” and it was very “bright”.

“It was just surreal,” she said.

“I didn’t think anyone was home because we hadn’t seen her in ages but then to find out that someone was actually inside is horrible.”

Nikisha said she wasn’t very close with her neighbour but she had “seen her up the road before”.

Firefighters were alerted to the fire just after 3am at Woodcroft Drive in Morphett Vale.

Six trucks responded to the fire and the area is now safe.

They were able to extinguish the fire but the house was destroyed with the estimated damage value around $500,000.

SA Police and SA Ambulance attended the scene.
