A small truck towing a rescue boat has crashed into a stobie pole on Brighton Road, causing power outages and traffic delays on Wednesday afternoon.
The Advertiser understands that a truck collided with another vehicle, before careering into a stobie pole and cutting power off to nearby homes and businesses.
The truck and boat appear to belong to the SA Sea Rescue Squadron, a volunteer marine rescue group that serves the boating public of SA.
Just before 3:30pm, police and emergency services were called to the intersection of Brighton Rd and Edwards St, Brighton, to the scene of a crash between a truck towing a boat and a car, before the truck then crashed into a stobie pole.
There are no reports of serious injuries.
A worker from the Brighton Foodland located at the shopping strip just near the crash, said the power went out but had since been turned back on.
“The power went out for about an hour and a bit in the store, we couldn’t hear the crash from inside,” they said.
“Our new generator didn’t work so we had to call someone in to fix it but eventually they got it up and running and no stock was lost.”
Another person from the same shopping strip, said she came outside her business after the crash, and saw no one was injured as emergency services were on their way.
“No one is in the vehicle, but there is a lady pointing and walking around the crash,” she said.
“It appears to have been pulling a rescue boat.
“Traffic is completely backed up heading toward the city, southbound is totally fine.”
SA Police said the driver of the truck was a man in his 80s, and the driver of the car was a 26-year-old woman who received minor injuries.
Both people involved were taken to hospital for assessment and treated for minor injuries.
North bound traffic on Brighton Road is down to one lane, but there are delays in both directions.
Tow trucks have been organised, including a crane for the boat. There are expected to be delays for the next few hours.
A SA Power Networks spokesperson said the crash impacted one of SA Power Networks’ high voltage poles causing a suburb-wide power outage.
“It happened around 3:24pm, impacting over 200 customers,” the spokesperson said.
“SA Power Networks currently has two crews and two traffic control vehicles on scene working to restore power.
“Power isn’t expected to be restored until 3am on Thursday morning.”
The Advertiser approached the SA Sea Rescue Squadron for comment, but can’t make one at this time. It is expected there will be a comment Thursday.
