Minh Hoa Quach denied bail on domestic violence charges

A man allegedly held a machete to his ex-partner’s throat in a terrifying assault before holding her hostage at his family home, a court heard.

Australia ‘absolutely in a crisis’ with domestic violence incidents

A man allegedly held a machete to his ex-partner’s throat before holding her hostage at his family home, a court heard.

Minh Hoa Quach, 28, was refused home detention bail in the Adelaide Magistrates Court this week after denying serious domestic violence allegations.

Mr Quach, of Gilles Plains, is facing multiple charges, including assault and false imprisonment.

A prosecutor said they were opposed to bail in any form.

The court heard Mr Quach and the alleged victim were in a relationship for two years and met up one last time for a drive after the relationship broke down.

“The accused pulled the car over, and hit her to the face three or four times,” the prosecutor said.

The court heard the alleged victim sustained a number of injuries, including lacerations to the head.

“During the course of that car ride the defendant told the complainant that if she tried to run he would kill her,” the prosecutor said.

The court heard Mr Quach then allegedly pulled a machete from the boot of his car and pressed it towards the woman’s throat, telling her “I’ll slice your neck”.

The court heard Mr Quach allegedly continued to drive while holding the machete to her throat.

“He told her I can kill you and nobody will find your body, I could break your arms and legs until you can’t run anymore,” the prosecutor said.

The court heard Mr Quach then took the woman to his family home at Magill and she stayed overnight until she was able to contact her family the following day.

Andrew Ey, for Mr Quach, told the court the charges were disputed and they had been committed for trial in due course.

Mr Ey told the court the woman didn’t alert Mr Quach’s parents while allegedly being held hostage as she said she didn’t believe they would assist.

“There’s the reason,” Magistrate John Wells said.

The prosecutor said Mr Quach’s criminal history consisted of causing harm and threatening to cause harm which related to another former partner.

The court also heard the woman alleged that Mr Quach took her to a number of pokie rooms while being unlawfully detained.

“In fact, footage we will anticipate will show that she was engaging in playing pokies with my client,” Mr Ey said.

Mr Ey said Mr Quach was previously granted home detention bail but removed his bracelet.

“The background is that his grandmother had passed away and there was a period of mourning in NSW,” he said.

The court heard Mr Quach was arrested on some minor charges in NSW before SA police arrested him again.

Mr Ey said Mr Quach had employment in a transport company if released.

Mr Wells refused bail, due to the seriousness of the allegations and the risk of noncompliance.

The charges were adjourned until July.
