Man to face court after female police officer punched in the face in Port Augusta

A routine patrol turned violent when a man seen stumbling in the middle of a street north of Adelaide allegedly struck a police officer who was trying to get his details.

A man will face court today after allegedly punching a female police officer in the face after a patrol stopped the man in Port Augusta just before midnight on Tuesday.

Police were on patrol in Conroy St when they saw a man stumbling in the middle of the road.

According to police, when officers spoke to the man and tried to obtain his details, the man became aggressive and struck the officer.

Extra police patrols were called urgently to the scene and one officer used capsicum spray to subdue the suspect.

The officer was taken to hospital for treatment of minor injuries and later released.

The 29-year-old man from the Northern Territory was charged with assaulting a prescribed emergency services worker, resisting arrest and refusing to state name and address.

He was refused bail and will appear in the Port Augusta Magistrates on Wednesday.
