A young man accused of trying to kill a middle-aged man in Adelaide’s west on Saturday night has faced court for the first time, after his alleged victim was rushed to hospital with life-threatening stab wounds.

Dylan James Nekic, 21, appeared in the Adelaide Magistrates Court in front of Magistrate Christopher Smolicz and two supporters present in court, charged with attempted murder and aggravated cause serious harm with intent. Mr Nekic, also from Seaton, is yet to enter any pleas and made no application for bail.

Defence counsel for Mr Nekic asked Mr Smolicz to list the matter for mention in late February next year “for an application to be released on bail”.

Emergency services were called to Frederick Rd in Seaton just before 10pm on Saturday night after reports of an assault.

A 63-year-old Seaton man was rushed to hospital with life-threatening injuries and remains in a serious condition.

Mr Nekic was found nearby and was arrested by police who alleged the two men were known to each other.

A woman at the scene was filmed shouting out: “babe, I love you, I love you” as police took Mr Nekic away.

Neighbours said they heard sirens late on Saturday but said that wasn’t uncommon near a busy road.

A nearby resident, who asked to remain anonymous, said the area was unsafe.

He said he had been previously assaulted while walking down his own street and recently had someone trespassing.

“There are some elements of what we’re seeing comparable to what’s happening in Alice Springs,” he said of the area.

Saturday’s incident occurred not far from where 19-year-old Scot Phillips was stabbed to death three months earlier.

Following the two unrelated stabbings, the local man said he was worried someone could target him next.

“The stress levels are enormous,” he said.

He added that he wanted to move but the housing crisis made it difficult.

On Monday, Mr Nekic was remanded in custody and will appear in court in April next year.
