Main North Road named Adelaide’s worst for serious injury crashes
RAA analysis has revealed Adelaide’s most dangerous intersections, with one recording 32 casualty crashes over five years.
A Main North Rd intersection and another on Marion Rd have been identified as Adelaide’s most notorious crash hotspots, with new RAA analysis revealing where the highest number of injuries and fatal crashes are occurring across metropolitan Adelaide.
The intersection of Main North Rd and Regency Rd had been named the most dangerous in Adelaide for serious crashes, recording the highest number of casualty crashes – incidents where someone is seriously injured or killed – over the past five years, with nine people seriously injured within the last 12 months.
Between 2020 and 2024, 32 casualty crashes – incidents where someone is seriously injured or killed – were recorded at the busy junction, which carries close to 70,000 vehicles each day, with figures confirming that right hand turns and rear end collisions are the most common crash types at the intersection.
Main North Rd features heavily across the wider data, with five of its intersections ranking in the top 10 across metropolitan areas.
The intersection of Marion Rd and Sturt Rd ranked second, also recording 32 injury or fatal crashes over the same period.
Further north, Peachy Rd and Curtis Rd in Munno Para ranked third with 26 casualties, despite carrying significantly fewer vehicles than many inner city intersections (32,000).
In total, 47 metropolitan intersections recorded at least 15 casualty crashes across the five year period, averaging three or more serious crashes every year at each site.
81 lives have been lost on South Australian roads this year.
