An alleged careless driver has faced court for the first time after a pedestrian was struck and killed in the CBD earlier this year.
Liaqat Ali, 61, appeared in the Adelaide Magistrates Court on Wednesday after the 65-year-old man who was hit sadly died at the scene.
He is charged with causing death by careless driving and due care, which he is yet to enter pleas to.
Emergency services were called to the corner of Wakefield and Frome streets, in the city’s east, just after 9:30pm on Sunday, March 30, following reports that two cars had hit a pedestrian.
Police say the pedestrian was crossing Wakefield St when a Nissan four-wheel drive struck him before a second vehicle, a Mazda station wagon, also hit the victim.
Sadly, the 65-year-old Adelaide man died at the scene.
Mr Ali, who was the alleged driver of the Nissan, was arrested by Major Crash officers.
The driver of the Mazda, a 20-year-old Hillcrest man, assisted police with their inquiries.
Both vehicles were towed from the scene for forensic examination.
Wakefield St, which is considered one of the CBD’s main thoroughfares, was shut while officers investigated the scene overnight.
The pedestrian’s death was the 23rd life lost on South Australian roads this year.
Mr Ali, of Mitchell Park, will face court again in July.
