A $1m shared-use path has been unveiled in Flagstaff Hill, creating the first ever uninterrupted link between the northern and southern pathways of Minkarra Park.

The 700m path – constructed by the Onkaparinga council – will provide safe off-road connection for pedestrians and cyclists between Black Rd and Chandlers Hill Rd, and also includes two boardwalk sections to maximise accessibility.

Infrastructure and Transport Minister Tom Koutsantonis said the opening of the path was “great news” for the Flagstaff Hill community.

“The opening of Minkarra Park Link Trail is great news for the local community and delivers on a $1m commitment we made before coming into government,” he said.

“It’s fantastic to see that hard work and planning, as well as the relentless advocacy of Erin Thompson, come to fruition.

“South Australia is building on so many levels at the moment, and community wellbeing is central to that effort.”

The path can be accessed via the existing trails from either Black Rd, Reservoir Rd or Manning Rd and includes two boardwalk sections, eliminating the need for stairs and allowing for better access.

It also includes safety fencing alongside one of the Flagstaff Hill Golf Club tee-off sections, with native revegetation to commence in June.

Onkaparinga Mayor Moira Were said the path would create more opportunities for people to “stay healthy, active and connected”.

“Minkarra has long held a special place in our community’s heart, but until now, the two sections have been separated by the Flagstaff Hill Golf Club course, which hindered safe and convenient travel between them,” she said.

“The new Minkarra Park Link Path has successfully bridged this gap, integrating with existing trails in each reserve, expanding our overall trail network, and creating more opportunities for pedestrians and cyclists to stay healthy, active and connected.”

“It’s a huge win for a community that’s been calling for this project for decades,” Davenport MP Erin Thompson said.
