Inside SA meth-accused dad Troy Smith’s Bali Police Detention Centre cell

With three meals of “wrapped rice” a day and just thin mats to sleep on, this is what SA dad Troy Smith’s life is like inside police detention.

Port Lincoln Troy Smith taken to hospital after drug charges in Bali

Each night, inside the four walls of the main room of the Bali Police Detention Centre, 10 suspects lay out thin mats and finish their third meal for the day of “nasi bungkus” – which translates to “wrapped rice” – ready for another disrupted sleep.

Port Lincoln father Troy Smith is now one of those inmates, being held in custody as he waits to learn his fate after 3.15g of methamphetamine was found inside a package sent to his hotel room in Legian, north of Bali’s party capital of Kuta.

Mr Smith, 49, is being held inside one large room that he shares with almost a dozen other suspects, with one shared toilet.

With the World Water Forum to be held in Bali in the coming days, security is high around the facility.

Mr Smith was transferred to the Detention Centre on May 6, several days after his arrest on April 30. Before that, he was being held at a small detention room at the Bali Drug Unit’s narcotics office.

The 49-year-old father-of-two had been in Bali for just a week before police swooped on the hotel room he shared with new wife Tracy Ijusa, now Tracy Smith, who he married in Nairobi in December 2023.

It was the first time the long-distance couple had seen each other since March, with Mr Smith living in Cairns – where he moved to in 2022 after becoming estranged from his children and ex-partner – and Mrs Smith staying in her home country of Kenya.

On Wednesday, Mrs Smith arrived at the Detention Centre carrying a lunch box filled with sliced watermelon.

Mr Smith’s lawyer Sienny Karmana said each time his wife had visited, she had brought fruit – one of his favourite things to eat.

While Mr Smith so far has “no complaints” about the detention, he was rushed to hospital on Monday with back pain from an injury believed to be sustained after he attempted to flee police during his arrest.

It has since been revealed it was Mr Smith’s second visit to hospital while in custody, with the 49-year-old also suffering from gout and knee pain.

While there are no programs to learn the Indonesian language within the facility, Mr Smith is understood to be learning Bahasa from a friend inside.

Ms Karmana said Mr Smith had met with a psychologist as his days inside detention, compounded by the self-confessed alcoholic and methamphetamine addict’s withdrawal symptoms, took their emotional toll.

“He is overthinking, he is filled with worry that his wife will leave him,” Ms Karmana said.

On Thursday, Mrs Smith posted an Instagram story showing her travels through Singapore Airport, although it was not clear whether the footage was taken that day.

The video was captioned: “Keep confusing them”.

A source close to Mr Smith’s family, who wished to remain anonymous, said relatives had flown into Bali to support him, while Mr Smith has now engaged John McLeod, the high-profile ‘fixer’ who helped free Schapelle Corby.

Mr McLeod has helped orchestrate the release of numerous Aussies from Indonesian prisons, including assisting Corby out of the island’s infamous Kerobokan jail — where Mr Smith could end up in a matter of weeks if his request to enter a rehabilitation centre is rejected.
