Guy Sebastian pays tribute to friends lost in Shellharbour plane crash
A devastated Guy Sebastian has described the couple who died in the horror Shellharbour Airport plane crash as “the kindest, most generous people you could know”.
Singer Guy Sebastian says he is “absolutely heartbroken” by the death of two of his friends in a horror light plane crash south of Sydney on the weekend.
Sebastian posted to Instagram on Monday that Andrew and Jules Conners were the kindest, most generous people you could know.
He met Mr Connors 15 years ago when the builder told him he was being ripped off for a building job.
“He did the job for less than a quarter of what I was quoted from other builders,” Sebastian said.
“That was the start of a friendship and the first of many acts of integrity and honour that I witnessed from Andrew.
“He LOVED his family and mates with everything he had. He built shelters for our foundation to help women escaping violence.
“He was a volunteer pilot for the flying doctors.
“He was always front and centre at the convoy and so many other charities.
“Even down to making sure he donated blood, Andrew and Jules epitomised what it meant to be a shining light in a community.
“As a friend, he was always checking in and cheering me on. The world is not the same without them. Thinking of the families involved and sending love to the Connors and also Colin’s family. Absolutely heartbroken.”
Sebastian’s social media post includes pictures of him and Andrew Connors snow skiing, fishing and flying together.
Mr Connors, 55, his wife Julianne, 54 and their close friend Colin McLachlan, 73, died when their plane crashed seconds after takeoff from Wollongong’s Shellharbour Airport about 10am on Saturday. The trio were on their way to the Bathurst 1000.
Lake Illawarra chief inspector Aaron Wunderlich told media on Sunday afternoon the crash was a “gruesome scene”.
“The plane has taken off on the tarmac and gone about 30 meters into the air. At that point, witnesses (said) the aircraft dipped with its left wing coming down and it contacted the tarmac,” he said.
“Unfortunately, the plane was engulfed.”
