A primary school in Adelaide’s north was evacuated on Monday afternoon amid dramatic scenes as water bombers tackled a grassfire.
Education Minister Blair Boyer confirmed the fire led MFS and SA Police officers to evacuate Gulfview Heights Primary School as a precaution, while CFS firefighters were also on the scene.
It is understood students were directed to shelter in the school gym as the firebombing took place
At nearby Wynn Vale Dam, locals witnessed a magnificent display as helicopters used the reservoir to refill as they fought the fire near Barker Road.
Social media was alight with footage of both helicopters and lightplanes water bombing the grass fire.
But for Gulfview Heights mother Linda Krouwel, 44, the fire hit close to home.
“We were very concerned as my 20-year-old son Jack is severely disabled,” Ms Krouwel told The Advertiser.
“He uses a wheelchair, requires a special bed and monitoring for when he’s asleep.
“He wouldn’t be able to be evacuated to anyplace, he’d have to go into respite.
“An evacuation would be very very difficult.”
Ms Krouwel took footage of the firebombing only 80m away where she said she could smell the smoke as the battle raged on.
“I’m very thankful to everyone for doing such a great job.”
An ambulance spokesman said a volunteer CFS firefighter was treated at the scene for heat stress symptoms.
There was otherwise no injuries reported and the fire was extinguished by 3.20pm.
