An Adelaide-built Collins Class submarine and Anzac frigate at Outer Harbor will kickstart a campaign to inspire young South Australians to embrace highly skilled, lucrative defence careers to gear up for nuclear-powered submarine construction.

The warships will be the star attractions at a Navy and Shipbuilding Careers Expo, designed to showcase more than 10,000 defence job opportunities expected to be created in South Australia during the next two decades.

Staged from November 3-5, the expo will include a dedicated school open day on the Friday and a Sunday public open day, when people can book to tour the submarine and frigate.

HMAS Warramunga, the third of the Victorian-built Anzac Class frigates, will be on display near the Port Adelaide Passenger Terminal, along with a yet-to-be-determined Collins submarine, built at Osborne Naval Shipyard.

Premier Peter Malinauskas encouraged young people to visit the expo to experience the range of defence jobs first-hand, ask questions, and tour a ship or submarine.

“South Australia’s focus is firmly set on uplifting the capability and capacity of our

industrial base to support defence capability and deliver the most complex naval

shipbuilding and defence projects in history,” he said.

“To do that, we’re going to need people. Highly skilled workers. To develop them, we need young people to fully understand the opportunities and pathways available to them to find a secure, well-paying, interesting job for life.”

The expo will include representatives from some of the world’s largest defence firms, along with tertiary institutions and Australian Defence Force careers.

At least eight nuclear-powered submarines built in Adelaide will hit the water from the 2040s under a $368bn program announced in March by Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, as part of the AUKUS security pact.

Both Mr Malinauskas and Mr Albanese have likened the nuclear submarine enterprise to the post-war Australian car industry, creating jobs, security and economic spin-offs for communities for decades.

In an interview with The Advertiser during his March trip to tour the UK’s Barrow-in-Furness nuclear submarine shipyard, Mr Malinauskas declared nuclear skills programs should be injected into primary and high school studies to prepare future workers for Adelaide-based submarine construction.

He said building a skilled workforce was the “single biggest risk” to the program.
