A man has with an “unhealth interested” in guns has asked a court to sentence him to home detention for his dealing in methamphetamine, fantasy and cannabis.

On Thursday, Judge Anthony Allan of the District Court heard the start of sentencing submissions in the case of Geoffrey Michael Mew, 42.

Counsel for Mew said they would be asking the court to consider sentencing him to serve any term of imprisonment on home detention.

The court heard the firearms offences, while serious, where on the lower end of the scale.

“These firearms, most of them except one I believe, are inoperable, one was just a skeleton,” defence submitted.

Mew was arrested on August 16, 2023, following a joint Australian Border Force, Federal Police and SAPOL search of his property that located four unsecured firearms and hundred of ammunition rounds.

Prosecutors said 1.88g of meth was located in a bum bag – valued between $450-$550 – and 41 text messages showing drug trafficking from as early as August 2020.

The Elizabeth Downs man pleaded guilty to one count of trafficking in a controlled drug, four varied counts of possessing a firearm unlicensed and one count of possessing ammunition without a permit.

Mew also admitted to breaching a suspended sentence imposed on November 11, 2022, for five counts of driving unauthorised after a drug driving suspension, two counts of driving while disqualified, four counts of breaching bail and failing to complete community service.

Prosecutor Brian Lian told the court Mew was also in possession of more than 2400 files relating to firearms that showed an “unhealthy interest” in the weapons.

“(The files) included, among other things, instruction leaflets, design books, and one in particular file titled ‘Automatic and concealable firearms design book’,” Mr Lian said

“It is also suggested in the psychological report that this defendant had an interest in engineering firearms.”

Judge Allan said the submissions would be best served with all information available to the parties, and ordered a home detention-suitability report.

His Honour told Mew the ordering of the report did not guarantee he would take that avenue when it came time to sentence.

Judge Allan adjourned the matter for further submissions in December.
