Sheffield Shield stump snatcher spoils SA's success

Eagle-eyed cricket fans have spotted an unfortunate on-air blunder after South Australia’s thrilling Sheffield Shield win over the weekend.

Despite breaking a 29-year shield drought, the historic victory sparked confusion in the Channel 7 newsroom in Perth.

Amused viewers were quick to point out the news team had used the logo of the South African cricket team, instead of South Australia, in its graphic behind presenter Anna Hay in Saturday’s 6pm bulletin.

Adding insult to injury is the fact the South African team logo is green, gold and includes the iconic Protea flower, while the SACA’s new logo uses the SA state colours of red, gold and blue.

But the embarrassing gaffe wasn’t any cause for concern for South Aussie cricket lovers, with hundreds of people flocking to Rundle Mall yesterday to celebrate the victory.

Test wicketkeeper Alex Carey and batsmen Alex Sangha were among the crowd’s favourites during the presentation, after both making important second innings centuries to help secure the victory.

Shield stump thief apprehended

Despite the majority of the crowd relishing in the wild celebrations on Saturday, one overzealous fan came under fire after attempting to take one of the stumps as a souvenir.

In footage obtained by 7News, a security guard can be seen trying to wrestle the stump out of his hand.

The South Australian Cricket Association is now investigating the incident.
