Police have confirmed they are investigating after flares were thrown on to the pitch at Coopers Stadium as more than 15,000 flocked to watch the Matildas win on Tuesday night.

The large crowd was largely well behaved but a second half incident saw fans let off flares in the second half.

Flares were thrown onto the pitch forcing security staff into action to clear the field of play.

SA Police commissioner Grant Stevens told ABC Radio Adelaide four flares were thrown onto the pitch and police were working to find the offenders.

In October, police were forced to investigate after two flares were set off during Adelaide United’s round one A-League win over Sydney FC at Coopers Stadium.

Footage showed a flare being ignited in the middle of the crowd and police said six people were ejected from the match.

In 2023, an England fan was arrested at The Drive in Adelaide after igniting a flare at the conclusion of the Matildas world cup semi-final loss at Stadium Australia.

The man ran towards the exit and lit a flare moments before a group of officers tackled him to the ground.

Football fans were not disappointed as the Matildas performed well with an entertaining win over New Zealand’s Silver Ferns.

A total of 15,097 were at Hindmarsh to watch what was an emphatic display by the Matildas in what is their last match for the year.

The match also saw superstar Sam Kerr back on the field in Australia for the first time in two years.

Australia won 2-0 after the Matildas got on top with a first half goal from Alanna Kennedy.

The match started to slow in the second half but Hayley Raso then found the back of the net in the 70th minute to delight fans.
