FIVEAA Breakfast presenter Tom Rehn shaken by near-death experience on Adelaide crossing

Adelaide media personality Tom Rehn has revealed his frightening near-miss after a car zoomed through a pedestrian crossing near the Arkaba Hotel – missing him by moments.

Adelaide radio host Tom Rehn has revealed his terrifying brush with death after a car blew through a pedestrian crossing – missing him by seconds.

The FIVEAA Breakfast presenter had been heading to the Arkaba Hotel at Glen Osmond Rd, Fullarton, to watch the State of Origin decider on Wednesday night when he decided to park across the road and use the nearby pedestrian lights to cross safely.

But while crossing Glen Osmond Rd near the Fullarton Rd intersection, disaster nearly struck.

“I’ve pushed the pedestrian crossing and it’s probably a 25m-30m walk across the road. Got the green man … I’m almost at the halfway point when the car that’s coming towards the city and turning right onto Fullarton … they’re coming quick. They’re not slowing down,” he recounted on air Thursday morning.

“I still had the green man, I could have kept walking but thank goodness I stopped at the halfway point and they went straight through it 50/60k an hour and I thought: ‘If I didn’t stop it’s probably game over.’”

Tom said the vehicle missed him by a matter of seconds and the incident left him shaken.

“It was a second away. I sort of put my hands in the air as he zoomed through but think either he or she wasn’t paying attention or was looking at the lights ahead which were green and saw those.”

His co-host Jade Robran described the site as “a dodgy intersection”, to which Tom replied: “It was really scary. It made me … I just went that’s a bit of a sliding doors moment right there.”

The close call made him reflect on how easily things could’ve gone differently, especially if one of his kids had been the one crossing.

“I’ve got a six-year-old … you know what they’re like, they run off ahead and you go, if they were, you know, then it is game over.”
