Explained: SA’s new Covid travel rules for interstate visitors

The border testing rules have changed again. And if your visiting relatives are in a state of confusion, they’re in good company. Here’s what you need to know to make it through easily.

If your Christmas visitors from interstate are confused about South Australia’s latest changes to travel rules, they’re in good company. As confusion reigns once more, we’ve answered your biggest questions about the new requirements.

Will testing be scrapped for interstate travellers?

The Prime Minister will today urge states and territories to scrap PCR testing as a condition of entry, as testing centres across the country struggle with demand amid a surge of Covid-19 cases. The national cabinet are holding an emergency meeting where states will be urged to “get some commonality” around testing requirements.

Will I need to get a test before I arrive in South Australia for Christmas?

Under the current direction, all travellers from Victoria, NSW and ACT must receive a negative test in the 72 hours prior to arrival.

Do I need to get a test once I arrive in South Australia?

Vaccinated people who have arrived into South Australia from Victoria, NSW and ACT are no longer required to have a Covid test upon arrival or on day 6.

Will I need to isolate or quarantine when I arrive?

Interstate travellers will not be required to isolate or quarantine on arrival.

How often will I need to be tested once in South Australia?

Travellers from Victoria, NSW and ACT will no longer be required to test once. However, you must monitor symptoms and get tested if any develop.

Do I need to fill out a form?

All interstate travellers to South Australia will need to fill out the EntryCheck SA application before arriving in the state. EntryCheck SA will assess your risk and advise of any entry conditions. You must adhere to the entry conditions specified in your EntryCheck SA approval.

Will I be able to visit family members in aged-care or hospital?

If you have travelled from Victoria, NSW and the ACT, you will be unable to attend high-risk settings for the first seven days. High-risk settings include residential aged care facilities, disability care facilities, a prison or correctional facility, public or private hospitals and Aboriginal community controlled health services.

What happens if I test positive to COVID-19?

If your test result is positive you will be contacted directly by SA Health. As soon as you get your result, you must self-isolate immediately. An assessment will be carried out on your symptoms and to determine if you can safely isolate away from others. Based on that assessment, you may be required to stay at home, a medi-hotel or hospital.
