Elizabeth Vale Soccer Club player Simon Matheson dies in motorbike crash
A soccer player famous for his legendary short shorts and game spirit has died in a tragic motorbike crash, devastating his local Adelaide club’s community.
The Elizabeth Vale Soccer Club is mourning the loss of one of its most well-known members, Simon “Matho” Matheson, who died in a motorbike crash north of Adelaide earlier this month.
Simon, 53, was a valued player at the club from the mid-1990s to the mid-2000s and is remembered for his legendary short shorts and the spirit he brought to every game.
The Port Adelaide man died after his motorbike left the road and crashed into a paddock at Pinkerton Plains about 6am on November 3.
Emergency services attended, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.
The club paid tribute to Simon in a post on November 5.
“On behalf of everyone at the Elizabeth Vale Soccer Club, we would like to extend our deepest condolences to the Matheson family and friends,” they wrote.
“We are so sorry for your loss and are all thinking of you during this difficult time.
“Rest in peace, Matho. You’ll be missed, mate.”
Fans and friends have shared heartfelt messages on social media, remembering Simon as a fantastic footballer, a mentor, and an all-round great bloke.
One post read, “Devastated getting that phone call.”
“He was a hard Vale boy with a heart of gold… RIP Simon. Taken too soon.”
Another added: “So terribly sad! He will be remembered by many and missed by so many more!
“Sending love to his family and friends.”
The funeral will be held at the Elizabeth Vale Soccer Club on Saturday, November 29, from 2pm.
The family has asked for privacy at this time and thanked everyone for their support.
The club also recently lost Terry Edwards.
