Dion Francis Coulthard, 53, faces court charged with attempted murder over Crystal Brook stabbing

A 53-year-old man has appeared in court after a horrifying attack that left a Crystal Brook local in a critical condition with stab wounds.

The Advertiser, 7NEWS Adelaide: Power's prelim eve, Crystal Brook stabbing

A middle-aged Crystal Brook man will spend the next four months behind bars on remand after he allegedly left a 47-year-old local in a critical condition following an overnight stabbing.

Dion Francis Coulthard, 53, appeared in the Adelaide Magistrates Court via video link on Thursday charged with one count of attempted murder and one count of aggravated causing serious harm. He is yet to enter any pleas and made no application for bail.

The prosecution asked Magistrate Aaron Almeida to adjourn the matter until August next year to allow for the return of forensic testing.

“This is a complex matter,” they said. “The balance of the time is primarily for forensic results to be received – in particular fingerprints and DNA evidence off of the knife that was seized and a number of items of clothing.

“There’s also significant investigations that are still ongoing. There is already a number of witnesses – five already – but follow-ups are being done at the moment for further witnesses and any other evidence.”

Police and emergency services were called to Giles St, Crystal Brook about 8pm on Wednesday after reports a man was stabbed.

The victim, a 47-year-old man from the address, suffered multiple stab wounds to his torso. He was taken to the local hospital before being flown to Adelaide in a critical condition.

About an hour later, Mr Coulthard was arrested and charged with attempted murder.

Kylie Pligl, for Mr Coulthard, said she was opposed to the length of time sought by the prosecution.

“If we’re looking at a charge determination date within 14 weeks, the defence would have no problem with that, but certainly looking at a remand until August is not accepted at all,” Ms Pligl said. “It’s too long for him to be remanded in custody.

“If there’s issues with forensics, I guess respectfully that’s not my client’s problem.”

Magistrate Almeida remanded Mr Coulthard in custody and adjourned the matter to January.

A trail of blood was left at the scene of the alleged attempted murder, with police also investigating if a nearby car fire on Gadd Ave is linked to the stabbing.

A Holden sedan was set alight about 7.45pm. The car was not stolen and the fire is being treated as suspicious.

Residents said the man also allegedly threw bricks on neighbours roofs and torched a car.

The owner of the destroyed vehicle, David Wallace, told 7NEWS he grabbed hoses to try to save his car.

“It’s unbelievable,” Mr Wallace said.

“There’s no reason for anyone to light my car on fire, I don’t have any enemies or anything.”

Another resident was shocked by the incident.

“You don’t expect that in a small town, not in a town like this,” he told 7NEWS.
