CFMEU cleared of SA criminal behaviour by SAPOL

Premier Peter Malinauskas says SA Police have delivered their findings on the disgraced CFMEU.

A police investigation has found the disgraced CFMEU, which has been forced into administration, has not engaged in criminal behaviour in South Australia, according to Premier Peter Malinauskas.

In July, Mr Malinauskas asked SA Police to launch an investigation into the rogue construction union after allegations were raised interstate that the CFMEU had links with organised crime and bikie gangs. The report led to long-time CFMEU head John Setka, who also led the union in SA, to quit the organisation.

The Premier said police had handed him a briefing on the CFMEU on Tuesday.

“Their advice on the back of that exercise to us is that there has been no evidence of criminal behaviour undertaken by South Australian elements of the CFMEU,’’ Mr Malinauskas said.

“That is welcome news, but that has not changed the fact that we are absolutely committed to the supporting of the CMU being put into administration.

“While there hasn’t been any evidence of criminal behaviour that doesn’t mean there hasn’t been evidence of behaviour that is unwelcome and inconsistent with the best traditions of the labour movement.’’
