A teenager allegedly broke into a sleeping stranger’s home before indecently assaulting her, a court has heard.
Ashley Percy Wilson, 19, applied for home detention bail in the Adelaide Magistrates Court on Wednesday after he told police he was simply looking for a wallet.
The court heard the alleged victim was in the lounge room asleep with her husband and two children on Christmas Day morning.
“She alleges that at that time she was awoken by a male who was rubbing her clothing over her vagina,” the prosecutor said.
“She awoke, realised it was not her husband (and) screamed.”
The court heard Mr Wilson then ran out of the house, with CCTV footage and DNA identifying him.
“There was then an incident the following day where CCTV saw the defendant within the rear yard of the victim’s address again,” the prosecutor said.
The court heard Mr Wilson was interviewed and made admissions to going to the address and entering the house.
“He states that he was looking for a wallet (and) was not trying to indecently assault her,” the prosecutor said.
Mr Wilson is charged with serious criminal trespass and indecent assault.
The court heard he had no criminal history.
“It’s a very strange one to kick off your history before the court,” magistrate Justin Wickens said.
Counsel, for Mr Wilson, agreed it was a strange set of circumstances but said his client had significant health and drug related issues.
The court heard Mr Wilson had schizophrenia and had been unmedicated for a few months, which led to an escalation in his behaviour.
Mr Wilson’s counsel agreed the allegations were serious but asked for him to be bailed to live with his mother in Henley Beach South so he could get the help he needs.
Mr Wickens ordered a home detention report and adjourned the application until next week.
