Alleged Munno Para stabber Ethen Evans to argue self defence after daylight shopping centre stabbing
A young man who alleged stabbed another man attempting to intervene in a domestic dispute will argue self defence, a court has heard.
A man who allegedly stabbed a good Samaritan attempting to intervene in a domestic dispute has told a court the daylight attack was “self defence”.
On Monday, Ethen David Clive Evans, 20, appeared from the Elizabeth Magistrates Court Cells as he applied for release to live at his father’s Murray Bridge home.
Prosecutors told Magistrate Rodney Oates they were “strongly opposed” to Mr Evans’ release on bail because he was already on bail and a good behaviour bond at the time of the alleged stabbing.
Counsel for Mr Evans said to keep their client in custody might see himself spend a “disproportionate” time in custody because he intended to argue self defence at trial.
During the hearing, Mr Evans repeatedly broke down in tears.
Mr Evans was arrested after Police and SA Ambulance crews responded to reports of a man being stabbed in the stomach in the carpark of Munno Para Shopping Centre, near the Hungry Jack’s, just after 3.30pm on Saturday.
Police allege a man was attempting to intervene in a domestic dispute between the alleged stabber and a woman.
The man was transported to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
On Saturday, detectives were seen collecting fingerprints from the remains of a shattered green glass bottle and investigating a blue car with a broken window and its content.
The Elizabeth South man is yet to enter any pleas to one count of aggravated causing harm with intent, assault, and damaging a motor vehicle.
On Monday, prosecutors alleged Mr Evans was also seen “waving a knife around” on various other occasions.
The court heard the victim was still in hospital due to the severity of his injuries sustained on Saturday.
Mr Oates ordered a home detention inquiry report, and remanded Mr Evans in custody to return to court later this month.
Any witnesses to the incident are encouraged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000, or online.
