Alleged Comanchero treasurer Hayden Bubner loses bail bid over plot to kill man on The Parade with sub-machinegun

An Adelaide court has heard alarming new details of how bikies allegedly used the AN0M app to plot the machinegun execution of a man known as “sexy” on The Parade.

The alleged treasurer of the South Australian Comanchero bikie gang had a lack of involvement in an encrypted group chat about an Operation Ironside assassination plot because he was “barking orders” rather than following them, a court has heard.

Hayden Bubner, 33, appeared in Adelaide Magistrates Court on Thursday, seeking home-detention bail.

Mr Bubner, who is charged with conspiracy to murder and participating in a criminal organisation, is one of five men charged over the plot to lure another man to a restaurant or cafe on The Parade at Norwood and gun him down.

The court heard the men planned to kill another man known as “sexy”.

Magistrate John Wells was told the court heard one of the messages sent by another accused on the encrypted AN0M app, which was being secretly monitored by law enforcement, discussed wanting to “remove the brains from someone’s skull”.

The prosecutor said Mr Bubner’s alleged role as Comanchero treasurer “explains why there is a paucity of comments and statements made by him in the group chat”.

“He’s one of the bosses. He’s not one of the people running around doing the leg work,” the prosecutor said.

“There’s nothing surprising about that, if you are one of the leading figures of an organisation barking orders rather than running around, as it were, following orders.”

He said the “crucial” conversation Mr Bubner contributed to “refers to ammunition, a 9mm silencer, heaps of ammo”.

“It’s pretty clear Mr Bubner is on board with a plan to obtain and stash a sub-machinegun in a public reserve,” the prosecutor said.

The court heard Mr Bubner was responsible for sourcing the weapon that was to be used in the planned drive-by assassination.

The court heard there were two chat groups – one that included the intended target of the alleged conspiracy and one titled “work”, which did not.

Kris Handshin, for Mr Bubner, told the court evidence indicated his client was “not involved in a meaningful way” in the alleged plot.

He said Mr Bubner was not present at an “offline” meeting among alleged plot participants in a park and there was no evidence discussions from the meeting were relayed to him.

Mr Wells refused bail and remanded Mr Bubner in custody until February.
