Alleged Comanchero bashing plot co-accused Goran Mazibrada and Domenic Franze granted home detention bail

The intended victim of an alleged bikie bashing plot broke the first rule of the Comanchero “brotherhood”, a court has heard.

Operation Ironside a ‘dramatic blow’ to Australian crime

The target of an alleged bashing plot broke the No. 1 rule of the Comancheros bikie gang by refusing to be involved in a brawl, a court has heard.

During a Supreme Court bail review for alleged gang member Goran Mazibrada, 43, of St Clair, the court was told the planned beating aimed to “maim” the intended victim – a fellow gang member.

A prosecutor told the court Mr Mazibrada’s alleged role, uncovered as part of Operation Ironside investigations, was to ensure the intended victim came to a planned North Adelaide meeting place unarmed in May. He and three co-accused charged over the plot are yet to plead to one count each of conspiracy to cause serious harm.

The prosecutor said Mr Mazibrada planned to “bring all the bats and all the tools” and told a co-accused only a wooden bat should be used because aluminium could bend and was “too soft”.

He said Mr Mazibrada had expressed “disgust” at the intended victim over his “breach of the so-called brotherhood” of the gang and its rules.

“The victim’s offence, if you could call it that, was refusal to become involved in a brawl and in doing so, he’s essentially breached rule No. 1 of the club,” the prosecutor said.

“Rule one is ‘Cowardice will not be tolerated’ so that is the offence for which (the victim) was to be punished.”

He said messages about the bashing plot on the encrypted AN0M application, which was being secretly monitored by police, included images of the victim’s body bearing large Comanchero tattoos.

The court heard Mr Mazibrada said the victim was “not worthy” of those tattoos and they must be “removed”. He allegedly sent a message which said: “If the gronk goes to the pigs after he gets f. ked up, then someone has to shoot him.”

Police allege a Comanchero dispute was behind a plot to bash a man.

The prosecutor said the beating inflicted was to be “severe” but the plot was thwarted when police alerted the intended victim.

“It was intended to severely, severely injure the victim if not maim him, disable him in some way or another,” the prosecutor said.

“The intended location was a golf course in North Adelaide which would have left this man lying bloody, beaten and bruised in the middle of a park until someone came across him.”

The court previously heard the men had planned to lure the intended victim to the Adelaide Aquatic Centre under the guise a third party was to be bashed, before travelling to another location together.

Marie Shaw QC, for Mr Mazibrada, said her client was married with a young son requiring specialist care and his family would suffer financially if he were kept in custody.

She said the intended victim was “back in the fold” of the gang within a day of being alerted to the plot and was “not concerned by the threat”.

Ms Shaw said the victim was “unaware of any issues and was not concerned by the threat” and there had been no suggestion of any further attempts to harm him.

Justice Anne Bampton said it was likely the intended victim was “quite suspicious of the police” and felt he had more alignment to his gang member mates.

She granted home-detention bail on “very, very strict conditions”, including that Mr Mazibrada be electronically monitored, own only one analog phone and not contact a list of other alleged gang members.

Justice Bampton also granted similar strict home-detention bail to co-accused Domenic Fernando Franze, 23, of Queenstown.

His alleged role in the plot included setting up a separate chat group aimed at luring the intended victim to North Adelaide. Both men will return to court in February.
