Destructive winds and wet weather lashed parts of South Australia on Tuesday, leaving Adelaide beaches inundated with foam and flooding across areas in the South-East.
Rain and strong winds hit Robe on Tuesday morning after a gale warning was issued for the south east coast, felling tree branches and pushing rubbish bins onto roads.
Parts of the already-damaged Robe Jetty were submerged as sea waves crashed against the coast.
BOM recorded a 96 km/h gust at Robe Airfield, with sustained winds of 72 km/h in the period about 10.22 am, after warning of damaging winds in a severe weather warning for the lower south east, Kangaroo Island and the Fleurieu Peninsula.
In a social media post, Kingston Council said multiple streets at Rosetown had been closed because of flooding and the severe conditions, with swells of up to six metres expected amid a significant storm surge.
The council urged people to avoid affected areas as the surge continued to breach the rockwall at Wyomi Beach early on Tuesday afternoon, pushing sea water and debris onto the road.
In the southern suburbs, sea foam has been filmed encroaching on the esplanade at Moana near the Surf Lifesaving Club.
It’s set to be a wet week for South Australia, with more than 80mm forecast.
Overnight on Monday, the Adelaide Plains received 10mm of rain, while some areas in the Adelaide Hills had up to 20mm.
The wild weather has led to significant storm damage, with SES crews more than 90
incidents since midnight, most being fallen trees.
Police had to manage traffic at one of Adelaide’s busiest intersections on Tuesday morning, with lights out at the intersection of King William St and North Tce.
Power was also out for just over 1000 SA residents, with reported outages in Cape Jervis, Eden Valley, Echunga, Humbug Scrub, Salisbury Downs, and Adelaide.
The lights were expected to come back for impacted homes later on Tuesday.
This comes as a severe weather warning was issued for parts of the state on Tuesday, with some regions forecast to be hit by strong, damaging wind gusts up to 90km/h.
The areas set to be affected include the Lower Eyre Peninsula, Kangaroo Island, Fleurieu Peninsula, and southern parts of the Yorke Peninsula.
Showers are expected to ease on Wednesday with a top of 15C, before the rain returns on Friday.
Bureau of Meteorology meteorologist Mark Anolak told FIVEAA a low pressure system moving across the state towards the end of the week would bring more heavy rains.
“Later in the week it looks like another big low pressure system moving across the state, so a return to wet conditions for the latter part of the week, and rainfall totals reaching, could be up to 30mm,” he said.
