Adelaide Central Market legend Con Savvas remembered after passing

After serving the Central Market community for 65 years, a beloved purveyor of fine foods has passed away.

Beloved Central Market stall owner Con Savvas has passed away aged 90.

Mr Savvas was a familiar fixture at the markets, running Con’s Fine Food for more than 60 years.

Alongside his three brothers Sam, Petro and Peter, Con established the stall in the Adelaide Central Market in 1959.

Con’s legacy of warmth, generosity and passion has been passed on to his sons Ross, Anthony and Alex Savvas, but also his daughter in-law and granddaughter.

“Dad was an icon of the Central Market but of course he was more than that too,” his youngest son Alex said.

“He was heavily involved in the Greek Orthodox community of South Australia for many many years.

“And we forget this because the focus is always on the business but he was a dad, he was a father, a grandfather, a husband … he was a lot more than just Con’s Fine Food.”

Con with his family outside the stall he ran for 65 years.

People have taken to social media to remember Con’s service to the Central Market community, with one saying “I worked with Con for a while, he was so very lovely. He’d blush a little when I’d call him King of the Market.”

“RIP, dear Con I was so young when I shopped in your store with mum, you will be missed by so many people that had the honour to have met you,” says another.

A public funeral for Con will be held on Monday, November 25 at 11.30am at the Cathedral of Archangels Michael and Gabriel, 286 Franklin Street.
