On Sunday, police arrested a 20-year-old man of no fixed address and charged him with rape. He appeared in the Adelaide Magistrates Court on Monday, before police issued their statement, where his name was suppressed. On Monday morning, a 17-year-old Blair Athol boy was arrested and charged with rape.

The incident comes amid a push by struggling Hindley St nightclub owners and landlords for the 3am venue lockout to be scrapped.

The president of Adelaide West End Association Taren Hocking described the alleged assaults as “deeply upsetting.”

“The safety of all of the people who work and visit our city is paramount and underpins the businesses and communities that call it home”, Ms Hocking said.

The state’s liquor watchdog is re-examining the “Late Night Code” that was introduced in October 2013, under the former Labor government, and which stops patrons moving between venues from 3.01am until 7am.

Last year, police foot patrols were reintroduced in Hindley St following concerns raised that public safety was at risk because of a lack of resources.
