South Australia Police have arrested a man for an alleged sexual assault following an investigation into a medical practice in Adelaide.
Police will allege that a teenage girl was sexually assaulted during a medical examination at a medical clinic on Sunday January 12.
A 62-year-old man from the southern suburbs has been arrested and charged with rape and indecent assault.
He was bailed to appear in the Adelaide Magistrates Court in late March.
Health authorities are taking the matter extremely seriously.
A notification has been made to the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency which has launched its own investigation.
An Ahpra spokesman told The Advertiser: “Ahpra has been notified by South Australian Police of serious allegations relating to a recent medical examination and is undertaking an urgent examination of the matters raised.
“No further information can be provided at this stage.”
Ahpra covers 15 National Boards governing a variety of health professions, such as the Medical Board of Australia, the Dental Board of Australia and the Pharmacy Board of Australia, and are responsible for registering practitioners and students.
National Boards have the power to take immediate action to limit or suspend a practitioner’s registration as a temporary measure if they reasonably believe a practitioner’s behaviour, performance or health poses a significant risk to public health or safety or on other public interest grounds.
Any immediate action is always interim action while a Board continues an investigation.
If a practitioner’s registration is suspended, they are not able to practise anywhere in Australia.
