Third bikie extradited, charged after fast food eatery frenzy

September 6, 10am: A third bikie alleged to be involved in a brutal bashing at a McDonald’s drive-thru in Tasmania's North-West has been extradited from South Australia and charged.

The 23-year-old Ingle Farm man, a member of the notorious Rebels Motorcycle Club, was extradited from South Australia on Tuesday, nearly one month after two other members were arrested by police after allegedly launching a frenzied attack on two men at the fast food eatery in Devonport.

On Sunday, August 6 at about 1am, three Rebels Motorcycle Club members allegedly jumped from a utility with interstate plates at the McDonald’s Restaurant in the Devonport CBD, before approaching two men.

Police will allege one of the victims was kicked in the ribs, and the other was hit to the jaw before the men fled the scene in the ute.

About 20 minutes later, the same two victims were in the Rooke St Mall with a group of friends, when they were approached again by the same offenders.

The bikies then allegedly launched a second attack on the men, as well as their friends, leaving six people with injuries.

Two people were knocked unconscious and four of the six victims were taken to hospital with various injuries. One of the people assaulted was a female, police say.

Two South Australian men, aged 23 and 30, were arrested and charged last month before the third man was arrested by South Australia Police's Crime Gangs Task Force on Tuesday and taken into custody.

The Ingle Farm man was charged with affray and assault and is expected to face Devonport Magistrates Court later on Tuesday.

The South Australian Rebels Motorcycle Club members arrested are part of a group accused of launching a frenzied attack on two men at the fast food eatery in Devonport last weekend, before bashing the same victims and their mates again minutes later.

In the wake of the assaults, the bikies were believe to have boarded a Spirit of Tasmania ferry bound for Geelong. But on Friday morning, police found them hiding out at a rural property owned by a Tasmanian Rebels member near New Norfolk.

Police will allege one of the victims was kicked in the ribs, and the other was hit to the jaw before the men fled the scene in the ute.

The bikies then allegedly launched a second attack on the men, as well as their friends, leaving six people with injuries.

Two people were knocked unconscious and four of the six victims were taken to hospital with various injuries. One of the people assaulted was a female, police say.

Two South Australian men, aged 23 and 30, were arrested and charged on Friday with affray and several counts of assault in relation to the alleged assaults.

The Tasmanian man will also face charges following a raid on the New Norfolk property.

Police found a quantity of drugs, gel blaster handguns styled to appear as real handguns and stolen property during their search.

Detective Acting Inspector Alex Bonde from Devonport CIB slammed the bikies’ “thuggish behaviour”.

“We have made it unequivocally clear we won’t tolerate the type of thuggish behaviour that occurred in Devonport last weekend, and we will do everything we can to hold those responsible to account,” he said.

“By helping these men avoid police apprehension, the OMCG has shown that it condones violence within our community.

“Tasmania Police is committed to ensuring the safety and wellbeing of our community members and we will continue to proactively target and disrupt OMCG activities.

“We have also identified a third man reportedly involved in the assaults from the weekend, and we’re working with our interstate counterparts to ensure he is held to account for his actions.”

Six injured in brutal bikie bashing at McDonald’s drive-through

August 8: Tasmania Police are on a nationwide hunt for a group of alleged bikies they say is responsible for acts of “sheer thuggery” in the state’s North-West on the weekend.

The group is accused of bashing two men at a McDonald’s drive-through in Devonport, before launching a second attack on the same victims and their mates minutes later.

In the wake of the vicious assaults, the attackers believed to responsible boarded a Spirit of Tasmania ferry departing Devonport for Geelong before local police could make arrests.

About 1am on Sunday, three to four alleged Rebels Motorcycle Club members jumped from a utility with interstate plates at the McDonald’s Restaurant in the Devonport CBD, before approaching two men.

Police say one of the victims was kicked in the ribs, and the other was hit to the jaw before the men fled the scene in the ute.

About 20 minutes later, the same two victims were in the Rooke St Mall with a group of friends, when they were approached again by the same offenders.

The alleged bikies then launched a second attack on the men, as well as their friends, leaving six people with injuries.

Two people were knocked unconscious and four of the six victims were taken to hospital with various injuries. One of the people assaulted was a female, police say.

The offenders fled the scene following the attack.

Tasmania Police say they have identified the offenders as interstate Rebels Outlaw Motorcycle Club members or associates following an operation on Saturday, when authorities tracked a number of members from the notorious club at the Spirit of Tasmania port at Devonport.

Western District Commander Stuart Wilkinson said the alleged OMCG members were “on notice”.

“Anyone involved in Outlaw Motorcycle Gangs, whether that be directly or indirectly, is not welcome in our community,” Comm. Wilkinson said.

“Tasmania is a safe place, and we will not stand for the violence and sheer thuggery witnessed during these assaults on the weekend.”

Commander Wilkinson said the victims of the “random” assault ranged in age from 19 to 24 years old.

He said the offenders were believed to have left the state, but Tasmania Police would continue to work with interstate agencies to make arrests.

The Rebels members were in Tasmania for an “organised function” at the Devonport chapter of the club, Commander Wilkinson said.

The assault comes as a 56-year-old Derwent Valley man was arrested last week as part of Taskforce Morpheus operations, where a raid on his property yielded a cache of drugs, replica guns, cash and stolen vehicles and other property.
