Man dead, two airlifted from serious crash on New England Hwy at Cooyar

Two people have been airlifted in a critical condition and a Kingaroy man killed in a single-vehicle crash on the edge of the Toowoomba and South Burnett regions.

A deadly single-vehicle crash near Kingaroy claimed the life of a Kingaroy man on Wednesday, and left two others critically injured.

It is now believed the vehicle, a Mitsubishi Eclipse was travelling southbound on Kingaroy-Cooyar Road, at Neumgna in the Nanango area, before it crashed down an embankment.

The driver, a 72-year-old Kingaroy man, suffered critical injuries and was declared dead at the scene.

A Queensland Police Service spokeswoman said initial reports indicated the vehicle had veered off the New England Highway at Cooyar near Kingaroy-Cooyar Rd and into a gully.

A Queensland Ambulance Service spokeswoman said paramedics had assessed three patients whose conditions ranged from serious to critical.

The two other occupants in the vehicle, a 68-year-old Kingaroy woman and a 43-year-old Highgate Hill man both sustained serious injuries and were flown to a Brisbane hospital in critical conditions.

As of just before 2pm on Wednesday, both lanes of Kingaroy-Cooyar Rd remained closed with long delays to be expected.

Diversions have been put in place.

The forensic crash unit are continuing to investigate the incident, with investigators appealing to anyone who may have witnessed the crash to come forward.
